In 1989, after the indie rock band The Housemartins disbanded, bass player Norman Cook returned to his home in Brighton. Armed with an early Akai sampler, an Atari computer, and thousands of vinyl records, he set out to blend UK sound system culture with American R&B and hip-hop. He gathered a loose collective of local musicians, vocalists, and graffiti artists, naming the project Beats International. While working on a dub-infused cover of The S.O.S. Band’s 1983 hit "Just Be Good to Me", Cook needed a vocalist who didn’t sound like a trained, polished diva. He met Lindy Layton, an 18-year-old local singer, at a party in Brighton. Her natural, understated, and slightly fragile vocal delivery gave the track its signature cool, effortless feel, contrasting perfectly with the heavy bass. Cook didn't just borrow elements—he built the entire rhythm section around Paul Simonon’s iconic bassline from The Clash's "Guns of Brixton" (1979), adding a heavy dub delay and pairing it with a drum beat from Graham Central Station's "The Jam" (1975). When the song blew up in early 1990 and spent four weeks at #1 in the UK, the original songwriters and publishers came knocking: 100% Royalties Lost: Because sampling clearance laws were rapidly tightening in 1990, the songwriters of The S.O.S. Band track (Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis) and the publishers of The Clash demanded full copyright ownership. The Financial Reality: Norman Cook eventually revealed that he made $0 in publishing royalties from the track's massive worldwide success. Every single penny went to Jam, Lewis, and the estate of the sampled artists. Despite the financial hit, the global success of "Dub Be Good to Me" established Norman Cook as one of the UK's most inventive producers. The experience taught him how to navigate sample clearance and set the foundation for his next legendary alter ego later in the decade: Fatboy Slim.
