@ambassador_iman: GAWASCO ISSUES PUBLIC ADVISORY ON SEWERAGE MAINTENANCE AND TEMPORARY OVERFLOW GARISSA COUNTY | 12 SEPTEMBER 2026 The Garissa Water and Sewerage Company (GAWASCO) has issued a public advisory regarding ongoing sewerage maintenance works and a temporary overflow affecting parts of the sewerage network in Garissa. Speaking during a technical briefing, GAWASCO Technical Officer Mr. Omar Sheikh Salah said the company’s desilting and maintenance exercise is progressing as planned. He attributed a significant accumulation of silt and solid waste within the sewerage network to improper disposal of waste and misuse of sewerage infrastructure at individual premises. Mr. Salah urged residents and customers to use the sewerage system responsibly and avoid disposing of materials that could cause blockages, particularly ahead of the expected long rains. The technical team clarified that the recent sewerage overflow resulted from a temporary system backup following extensive desilting and maintenance operations. The works required an interruption of normal sewer flow for several days, leading to a temporary accumulation of wastewater within sections of the network. GAWASCO has since deployed pumping operations to clear the accumulated wastewater and restore normal flow. The company is also implementing additional remedial measures, including the installation of a pump to facilitate the transfer of wastewater to Bulaid, an intervention expected to significantly reduce the current spillover and improve system efficiency. GAWASCO has appealed to residents to remain patient and bear with the temporary situation for the next three days as its technical team completes the ongoing interventions. The company has reaffirmed its commitment to providing reliable water and sewerage services to residents of Garissa County and urged the public to cooperate in protecting and properly utilising sewerage infrastructure.
