What is Rigger III (TÜV)? Rigger III is a professional rigging competency/certification level for personnel who perform basic lifting and rigging operations. In Saudi Arabia, the exact scope depends on the client/company certification scheme. For Saudi Aramco, Rigger III is defined as a rigger who can rig basic loads up to 10 metric tons, except lifts that specifically require a higher-level rigger or competent person. First, an important point about “TÜV” TÜV is not another level of rigger. TÜV refers to an independent certification/testing organization. Different TÜV organizations have different certification schemes and scopes. For example, TÜV Rheinland Saudi Arabia currently lists a Rigger II course, while its lifting certification information also describes written/oral and practical examinations for certain rigger/signalman schemes. So, if someone says “Rigger III TÜV certificate,” you should check the actual certificate to confirm: * Which TÜV organization issued it * Certificate number * Certification scope * Load limit * Expiry/validity * Whether the particular project/client accepts it For Saudi Aramco work, current Aramco documentation specifically identifies Rigger-III as an allowable certification level, but acceptance depends on the applicable certification requirements and approved issuing route. ⸻ Rigger III — Main Responsibilities A Rigger III should be able to safely: 1. Select the correct rigging equipment. 2. Inspect slings and lifting accessories before use. 3. Calculate/verify the load weight. 4. Identify the Center of Gravity (COG). 5. Select an appropriate lifting point. 6. Select the correct sling arrangement. 7. Understand sling angles and tension. 8. Calculate or verify sling capacity. 9. Connect shackles, master links, slings, hooks, etc. 10. Use correct lifting hitches. 11. Communicate with the crane operator using standard hand signals. 12. Establish and maintain an exclusion/barricaded area. 13. Control the load during lifting and movement. 14. Follow the approved lifting plan/SWI where applicable. 15. Conduct a post-use inspection of rigging equipment. A Saudi training provider’s Rigger III outline similarly covers duties, lifting accessories, load weight and COG, SWL/WLL, inspections, rigging techniques, ground conditions, communication, barriers and practical assessment. ⸻ Rigger III Practical Test For the Saudi Aramco Rigger III performance assessment, the candidate is expected to rig, lift and move two basic loads up to a maximum of 10 tons to a predetermined location. The candidate must demonstrate that they can: * Determine the correct rigging method * Select equipment of the correct size and capacity * Perform pre-use inspection * Rig the load * Lift the load * Move the load * Perform post-use inspection * Give correct crane hand signals when applicable So the practical examination is not simply about knowing the names of slings and shackles—you must demonstrate safe rigging competency. ⸻ Rigger III Written/Technical Knowledge Important subjects include: 1. Rigging Equipment You should know the identification, application and inspection of: * Wire-rope slings * Web/round slings * Shackles * Master links * Hooks * Eye bolts * Swivel hoists/adjusters where applicable * Chain slings * Spreader/lifting beams * Other lifting accessories 2. SWL and WLL You need to understand: WLL = Working Load Limit SWL = Safe Working Load You must know the rated capacity of the equipment and never exceed its permitted capacity. 3. Sling Angle Sling angle is extremely important. For example, with a two-leg sling arrangement, reducing the sling angle generally increases the tension in each sling leg. Therefore: Smaller sling angle = higher sling tension. A Rigger III should understand how sling angle affects capacity and tension. 4. Center of Gravity Before lifting, you need to determine where the COG is. If the load’s center of gravity is not correctly considered, the load can: * Tilt * Shift * Swing * Slip from the rigging * Become unstable #NIAZI #MR_NIAZI_LIFTING #CraneOperator
