@kat.triplanner: ⤵️🕌The secrets Mimar Sinan built into Süleymaniye When you look at 📍𝗦𝘂̈𝗹𝗲𝘆𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘆𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝗾𝘂𝗲 it’s easy to focus on how beautiful it is. But behind that beauty is the extraordinary engineering of 𝗠𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗿 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻, one of the greatest architects in history 🕌 The mosque was completed in 1557, almost 470 years ago, without modern technology or electricity. 🕯️ Hundreds of oil lamps illuminated the interior, but Sinan designed the airflow to carry their soot into a special chamber instead of letting it cover the walls. That soot was then collected and used to make ink. 🔊 Almost 470 years before microphones Sinan had hundreds of hollow clay jars built directly into the dome. They worked as resonators, helping control the echo and carry the human voice through the huge prayer hall 🥚 There were even ostrich eggs hanging among the mosque’s lamps! They were traditionally used to help keep spiders and insects away 😳 And this wasn’t even the work Sinan considered his ultimate masterpiece! He famously described Süleymaniye as his “journeyman’s work”, reserving that title for Selimiye Mosque, which he built later in Edirne. 👨🏼‍🦳And maybe the craziest fact is Sinan himself. He was already around 67 when Süleymaniye was completed and he didn’t slow down.
