Yet the government still spends up to $110 million per year funding these programs that deny young people medically accurate, inclusive, and potentially lifesaving info about their bodies, reproductive health, and relationships. Here’s what the data says: 🔹States that emphasize abstinence-only education have higher teen pregnancy and birth rates. 🔹A federal HHS-funded analysis found that abstinence-only programs have no impact on preventing pregnancy, HIV, or other STIs (Evidence-Based Sex Education: The Case for Sustained Federal Support, 2025) 🔹These programs leave young people unprepared to protect themselves when they do become active. 🔹Abstinence-only curricula are often heteronormative and stigmatizing, putting LGBTQ+ youth at even greater risk for negative health outcomes. Meanwhile, comprehensive education that includes accurate info about reproductive health, anatomy, STIs, consent, healthy relationships, and more — actually works 📚💖 It leads to: ✅ Delayed initiation of activity ✅ Fewer partners ✅ Increased use of protection and contraception ✅ Improved communication skills and reduced intimate partner violence It also supports informed decision-making, and helps build stronger, safer communities. 📉 Teen pregnancy rates are significantly lower in states that teach CSE.
