Eh… Singapore has to 63 gyms for every 100k residents. So with population at 6.1m based on 2025 census data, are we saying that there are 3,780 gyms? Got so many meh?

Yet new gym keep opening. Pure Yoga’s problem isn’t that people stopped exercising; if anything, fitness demand has grown. The problem is an expensive big-chain model built around large premises, high fixed costs and selling memberships faster than capacity can comfortably absorb. Lifetime and heavily discounted long-term memberships make it worse: the cash is collected upfront, but the member keeps consuming space and services for years without generating much new revenue. Eventually the gym gets overcrowded, service deteriorates and management needs an endless stream of new members just to keep the economics working. That isn’t a sustainable fitness model; it starts looking dangerously dependent on tomorrow’s sales paying for yesterday’s promises.
