@victorynekesalens: WHO WAS REALLY LEARNING FROM WHOM? 🐒👶 In 1931, psychologists Winthrop and Luella Kellogg conducted a controversial experiment involving a young chimpanzee named Gua and their infant son, Donald. Gua was raised alongside Donald and treated much like a human child—wearing clothes, eating at the table, following household routines and learning to respond to commands. The researchers wanted to explore how much behavior is shaped by environment versus biology. At first, Gua appeared to perform remarkably well in several tasks. But then came the unexpected twist. Instead of Gua simply becoming more human, Donald began imitating some of Gua’s behaviors, including certain sounds, gestures and forms of nonverbal communication. After about nine months, the experiment was stopped, partly because researchers were concerned about its possible effects on Donald’s language development. Imagine studying how a chimpanzee might learn from humans—only to discover that the human child was learning from the chimpanzee too. Sometimes, the most unexpected lessons come from the world around us. 🐒❤️ Reference: Winthrop N. Kellogg & Luella A.
