Judges 16:18 sits at the climax of the story of Samson and Delilah: The Secret of Strength: Samson was an Israelite judge endowed with supernatural strength stemming from a Nazirite vow made at birth, symbolized by never cutting his hair. The Betrayal: The rulers of the Philistines offered Delilah a massive bribe—1,100 pieces of silver each—to discover the source of his power. The Interrogations: Delilah repeatedly asked Samson for his secret. Three times he gave her false explanations (tying him with fresh bowstrings, using new ropes, or weaving his hair into a loom). Each time she tested his answers by trying to trap him, but he easily broke free. The Break Point (Verse 18): After continuous pestering, Samson broke down and revealed the real source of his strength: his uncut hair. Delilah realized he was finally telling the truth. Verse 18 records her calling the Philistine lords back to execute the betrayal and collect her reward. Directly following verse 18, Delilah lulls Samson to sleep, has his hair shaved off, and hands him over to the Philistines, who gouge out his eyes and imprison him.
