👀 Can you spot what’s happening in this mare’s hind stride? 🎥Watch the first few seconds in real time and see what you notice before the slow-motion replay. 🔍Then watch again in slow motion and pay particular attention to the hind feet during the flight phase of the stride. What do you see? Drop your thoughts in the comments before reading on. 👇 This mare was dragging her hind toes, but the timing of that drag is important. Her breakover is actually quite clean. The hoof leaves the ground normally, then partway through the swing phase the limb “dips” and the toe taps or brushes the ground before being picked up again and carried forward. This kind of movement can sometimes be dismissed as a horse being “efficient”, “daisy-cutting”, or simply moving close to the ground. A toe contacting the ground halfway through the flight phase is not normal movement and deserves further investigation, particularly if you’re also seeing wear or scuff marks on the dorsal hoof wall. And this is why looking at when the toe drag happens matters. Toe wear alone does not tell us that the horse has delayed or difficult breakover. In this mare’s case, she was found to have sore hocks. Once her hocks were appropriately managed, the mid-flight toe dragging ceased. The hooves can leave clues about what is happening higher up the limb and through the rest of the horse. If you’re seeing unusual toe wear, don’t just look at the foot. Watch the horse move, and watch the whole stride. #horses #farrier #hooves #hoofcare #movement
