The nun study is related and very interesting — nuns tend to live longer than other demographics, the theory for why being a sense of purpose into elder years and a strong, supportive community as they age. This reduces stress and improves optimism. So maybe the best answer of all for achieving longevity is to not focus on marriage or gender, but on your own outlook, attitude, sense of purpose, and community.

I think the reason men get a bigger mortality advantage from marriage may partly be that they have higher cardiovascular risk and mortality. A single man is more likely to live alone, so if he suddenly has a heart attack or another medical emergency, there may be no one there to help. A married man is more likely to live with his wife, who can notice the emergency and call for help immediately. And since survival in many acute medical emergencies is highly time sensitive, this could reduce mortality

What I do think is probably true is the fact that married men tend to live longer, largely because their partners make them get regular checkups and go to the doctor for aches and pains, etc. At least that's what I see around me.

What about marriage vs life partnerships where the couple just aren’t officially married? Do the claims, or stats include that as differentiation? Is it “MARRIAGE” that is making a difference, or a “RELATIONSHIP”? Their claims suggest that it’s all about MARRIAGE.
