“See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” is a famous expression traditionally represented by the Three Wise Monkeys: 🙈🙉🙊. Similar teachings about avoiding evil by not seeing, hearing, or speaking it existed in earlier Chinese philosophical and religious traditions, and the concept is often connected to teachings attributed to Confucius, although the exact origin of the three-monkey image is debated. Over time, the symbol spread beyond Japan and became internationally recognized. In modern culture, the phrase can have both a positive and a negative meaning: positively, it can represent refusing to participate in cruelty, gossip, hatred, or wrongdoing; negatively, it can describe someone who deliberately ignores a problem by choosing not to see it, hear about it, or speak about it.
