Some female athletes are criticizing a new advertisement featuring actress Sydney Sweeney, arguing that it sexualizes women in sports. The “Just Sports” campaign, which debuted last Wednesday for the sports-prediction market Novig, features the ‘Euphoria’ actress nearly nude. The video got tens of millions of views on the company's Instagram within days. “Sydney Sweeney, this is what women in sport look like,” British sprinter Amy Hunt said after finishing fourth in the 200m final at the Ultimate Championship in Budapest on Sunday. “Muscles. Hard work, blood, sweat, tears.
“Muscles. Hard work, blood, sweat, tears." Former UCLA gymnast Gracie Kramer, Australian Olympic swimmer Lani Pallister and Australian sprinter Bree Rizzo also responded to the ad, posting photos of themselves competing with the message about what women in sports look like. Sweeney appeared to respond Sunday, posting a series of photos from ESPN's annual “Body Issue," where athletes appear nearly nude, to her Instagram stories. “The campaign was about embracing a fun idea. The concept is simple: cut through the noise and put the focus entirely on sports. The campaign brings that idea to life with confidence, humor and a playful edge,” Sweeney, 29, said in a statement last week. Sweeney is an equity holder and strategic partner in the company. Since the campaign launched, around 200,000 Instagram users have “unfollowed” Sweeney’s account, according to data from social-media analytics firm Social Blade. Last year, Sweeney starred in a campaign for American Eagle that highlighted her “good jeans” — a pun on “good genes” that some critics saw as an endorsement of genetic superiority. Sweeney did not apologize for the campaign when pressed about it by a @gq reporter, but later told @people, "Anyone who knows me knows that I’m always trying to bring people together. I’m against hate and divisiveness.” Sources: @hollywoodreporter, @bbc, @people, @variety
