In an Atlanta suburb last month, 300,000 people were told to boil their water. Here’s what’s happening. Since late July, hackers have hit water and wastewater utilities in at least 12 states, Michigan, Minnesota, Georgia, New Jersey and South Dakota among them. Minnesota alone had more than 30 community water systems targeted. Georgia’s Clayton County Water Authority saw its water pressure drop and issued a boil water advisory. Service came back within hours. The way in was almost boring, and that’s the scary part. Water plants run on small industrial computers called PLCs, basically the thermostat for your city’s pumps and valves. They are not supposed to be reachable from the open internet. A lot of them were. Attackers logged in remotely, changed the IP addresses and set new passwords, and locked operators out of their own systems. Some plants lost pressure. Some flooded. Some had to run the whole operation by hand. Officials suspect Iran. It has not been formally confirmed, and investigators are even checking whether someone wanted it to look Iranian. Attribution takes weeks. The good news: no confirmed contamination. The drinking water is safe. What you can do this week: → Sign up for your water utility’s text or email alerts. That is how you’ll hear about a boil water notice, not from the news. → If you get one, follow it. “Precautionary” doesn’t mean “optional.” → Report sudden changes in pressure, taste, or color to your utility, not to Facebook. → Keep a few days of bottled water at home. Same logic as a flashlight in a drawer. And if you work anywhere near operational technology: get your PLCs off the public internet behind a gateway, kill the shared and default passwords, lock devices in RUN mode, and actually practice manual operations. The FBI and EPA advisory spells out every step. Most U.S. water systems are run by small local governments where cybersecurity competes with school buses and road repair. That’s not a hacker problem. That’s a priorities problem and it’s one we can actually fix. #Cybersecurity #CriticalInfrastructure #WaterSecurity #OTSecurity #NationalSecurity
