The scent of the waters, the warmth of the nesting stone, and the presence of eggs and hatchlings quieted the old violence in their blood; yet when fresh blood touched the salt, that peace was broken in an instant. Then every head rose, every wing unfurled, and the whole basin turned upon the source of the wound. Thus the Skarlanders learned to call the Saltspire Baths a bloodless ground, and even the boldest hunters would not loose a spear within sight of its white terraces.
