I walked out of the most traumatic code I’ve ever had as they rolled in with the next code to the trauma bay next door. I got .2 seconds to breathe and do it all over again

Happens faster than that and we have to smile for the next pt. Yet people question why we have such dark humor and why we come off as cold. Most couldn’t survive the job.

My hospice resident as he was passing 'this right here is my best friend, I've known her since I was a child!' me 'you sure did, you're my best friend too' NOT EVEN 5 MINUTES LATER AFTER HE PASSED AND I LEFT THE ROOM 'Happy birthday Gramma!!!! we bought you got you cake, this lovely helper will help cut it for you!' me *pulls it together* 'heck yeah, let's eat some cake and party!' I went home and literally bawled until I threw up.

I had a patient die in bed 57 one day. The floor was full and all the other nurses had a full load as well. They had the patient in the morgue and cleaned in less than an hour. I hadn’t even finished the paper work when I got another patient in that same room about one hour I coded the last. When I introduced myself to the new patient my hands were still trembling from the code and death. That was over 15 years ago.
