@travismayo: In 1971, philosopher John Rawls asked what rules you'd choose for society if you didn't get to know your own race, wealth, or health once the rules took effect. #TravisMayo #learning #philosophy #ethics #rawls
Just once at the outset, or at every birth? Otherwise, that would mean parents no longer have to—or are no longer able to—make financial provisions for their children. Building up assets across generations would not be possible.

So you’re saying after the Rules was set then Race and Gender, Wealth and health was known!! What was the rules before there was any rules?? I say every individual makes his own rules since we are living in the age of being alone perhaps we can connect every individual to a pc and download the character that will be played in the system

Rawls basically took the Solomonic division and expanded it. One side divides and the side chooses. The choosing in his model is random assignment.

that's the way it's supposed to be but unfortunately rules are for the poor not to break them but the elite have all the advantages. look at Trump. he pardons all the rich criminals. he pardons his own family so nobody can go after them when he leaves the office. the rich tell u not to wash your car there is a shortage of water but the make money by using millions of gallons cooling thier data centers. California says there is no water but the super rich have all thier crops growing without any problems and don't have to pay massive water bills. our fucking rules are made to keep us down and inline while the rich fucking us over

societies.
I used this for AI welfare/wellbeing.
As AI agents can be seen as a workforce, you can organise them with rules, let's say a company 's culture. and you can draft the company culture using John Rawls ' thought experiment. You can go further, and ask an agent (or a team of them) to do the thought experiment and draft the company culture by themselves.
Also mentioning your other post, as the agents have to communicate with each other to work together as a team, I used Grice's Maxims to set up healthy communication channels and foster collaboration.
Mayo keep going! Apart from ai welfare, your efforts to debunk common sense is amazing. Each post is a silver bullet.

it's pretty obvious to us, that the rules and the system were/are designed by those who have indemnity from the rules.
but, if observation wasn't clear enough, then this thought experiment should dismiss any lingering doubts.

I'd like to see that as a strategy board game. Imagine a round table with two or more players sitting around it, deciding which rules will be followed on the board spread in the middle. Then they open a box with small envelopes, and each one takes one containing the role they will be assigned in that society, along with the tools to fulfill that role. The players discover what they are, and they continue to find out if the rules they initially agreed on were inclusive and fair. Thank you for the info; it's very interesting.

I didn’t know this experiment. This is quite interesting. What rules would you create in a world where you are the creator ? 😁

that's the way it should be and a good democracy immidates this situation by giving everybody a vote. In reality it is not. And even if we assume the veil of ignorance is possible - what if you have a gambler and not a risk avers human?

what a manipulation! do just rules no matter race, gender or social status, since those are things you dont get to choose, but making a justice system that protects crminals just becausr you mught be accused...thats the fine manipulation to make us accept the blatant injustice everywhere!
