It's so interesting to see it happening while there's so much discussion about whether readers see themselves as the main character or as viewer watching characters because this concept explicitly casts the viewer as the romantic lead but when I try to think of how it could not be as cringe, it would involve there being a FMC stand-in to receive the attention instead of just like...me in sneakers at SeaWorld in the daylight.
