My partial glossectomy surgery was scheduled for Wednesday. My previous PET scan didn’t identify the primary tumor site so the plan was to go in and locate the primary site and potentiallly remove a lingual tonsil. However, once we were out of surgery, the surgeon told us the plan changed when he got in there. After they got a look, he decided to remove both of my lingual tonsils (base of the tongue) and scrape some tissue from the area of a previously removed palatine tonsils from my teen years. The good news is that he’s hoping that he’s removed the primary tumor site! The tissue samples will be sent for pathology to test for margins. If the margins are clean, that might mean I’ll be cancer free in the mouth! However, I still have the mass in the neck to contend with. Thursday I go back to my Post-Op appointment and we should have the results back regarding the margins. With that information, I’m anticipating the care team will share their plan for treatment. I’m guessing it will be a 7 week chemo and radiation plan, but that’s just speculation based on how I’ve seen other similar cases treated. I’m not sure if removing the primary site means it will narrow my radiation field enough to substantially reduce side effects, but I’m still happy at the prospect we may have it removed from the mouth/tongue! My family has secured a harvest of options for my liquid diet of protein water, Gatorade, popsicles, Boost, Ensure, soups and pudding. It’s hard to talk right now, so the fam is enjoying that. 😂🤪 I would be thankful for some actual sleep rather than the 15-20 minute snoozes before my throat wakes me up. #scc #cancer #headandneckcancer
