It’s always been so wild to me that the rich prefer this over paying more in taxes. You can hide the poverty from your view, but at the end of the day paying so much extra for HVAC air filtration systems, specialized landscaping, security, top of the line water filtration, private transportation, the high costs of imported specialized foods all so that you can limit exposure to the pollution and poverty right outside the gate, and the high costs of bribing politicians and keeping governing systems corrupt to your own benefit is so much more expensive than just paying a little more to better life for everyone instead of hoarding. But even with all those accrued costs to keep the wealth gap, gapping you still have to go outside and breath the air. You’ll still be destroying your own groundwater and soil. You’ll still be vulnerable to attacks and riots. And you’ll still have this background voice of fear and worry that at any moment something or someone is going to come and burst your bubble to take it all away and ruin your small little isolated enclave. Maybe just I dunno, redistribute a bit of that income and spend resources to ensure an effective government is in place so that the extra taxes you do give actually benefits everyone and the country instead of lining pockets and feeding corruption.
