“Were they created by nothing, or were they themselves the creators?” — Qur’an 52:35 If the universe began to exist, what kind of cause could stand behind it? As-Samad — The Self-Sufficient: everything depends upon Him, while He depends upon nothing. Al-Ahad — The One: the one and unique God. The Qur’an repeatedly tells us to look at creation, reflect and reason. The deeper we ask, “What must the cause of the universe be like?” the more striking the comparison becomes.
