Calling out Mondelez for not using enough cocoa solids in Cadbury’s to even be classified as milk chocolate in the EU 🤦‍♀️ Mondelez is a huge American multinational confectionery, food and beverage maker whose other brands include Oreo, Ritz and Philadelphia and so cadburys is not the small British company it once was. And just to clarify - in the UK, milk chocolate can only be called milk chocolate if it has a minimum of 20% cocoa solids so cadburys does meet that standard. In the EU, however, the minimum percentage of cocoa for milk chocolate is 25% so it doesn’t meet that standard and hence why I believe they don’t call it chocolate on the front of the packs we see in Ireland. Does it call it chocolate on the front of packs in the UK?! I’d love to know from anyone living in the UK? Once upon a time, Cadbury used to advertise with the slogan, “A glass and a half of full-cream milk”. That’s not used anymore, though you will still see a picture of milk being poured from two glasses on the front of the pack! 🙈 After milk & sugar, cocoa butter and cocoa mass are the key ingredients. The butter is the fat extracted from cocoa beans and is the most expensive ingredient in chocolate. Then there’s vegetable fats in palm or shea oil, with no sign of the palm oil being sustainably sourced. E442 is also known as ammonium phosphatide and is used in place of soy lecithin as an emulsifier. It is popular with chocolate companies as it helps to prevent the cocoa butter and powder from separating. E476 is polyglycerol polyricinoleate. It is used to improve flow and means that less cocoa butter can be used - ie to make it cheaper! Finally, “flavourings” could refer to any of the thousands of artificial tastes created in laboratories. For these reasons I love The Lidl 32% JD Gross as a clever swap for milk chocolate! The cocoa solids are much higher, it doesn’t use palm fat, E476 or flavourings and regarding taste - it tastes much more like how milk chocolate should taste too 🍫 And it’s Fairtrade.
