WOE TO THOSE WHO HAVE BELIEVED IN GOD FOR YEARS BUT STILL DO NOT KNOW THEMSELVES! If you have believed in God for many years but still do not truly know yourself, this is not a small problem. It is dangerous. And by “know yourself,” I do not mean knowing your personality, strengths, or weaknesses. I mean this: Do you know the sinful corruption hidden in your heart? Do you recognize the corrupt dispositions within you—your pride, selfishness, deceit, greed, jealousy, and hatred? Do you recognize your desire for status, reputation, personal gain, and the admiration of others—even the dishonest or improper means you may use to get what you want? These are not merely passing thoughts or momentary weaknesses. They reveal the corruption within us. Jesus said: “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.” Mark 7:21–23 (KJV) The deeper problem is not only what we do. It is what exists within us. Maybe you have never committed some terrible public sin. But have you lied, hated, been jealous, acted selfishly, or protected your reputation? These are manifestations of corruption. Yet Scripture repeatedly calls believers to holiness. Peter wrote: “Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:16 (KJV) And Hebrews says: “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:” Hebrews 12:14 (KJV) Holiness is not optional. Revelation gives an even more serious warning: “And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth…” Revelation 21:27 (KJV) If you cannot see the corruption within you, how can you truly repent of it? If a sick person cannot even recognize the disease, how can it be treated? If you cannot recognize your pride, deceit, selfishness, and other corrupt dispositions, how can you turn away from them? A person who does not know himself can spend years judging everyone else while always defending himself. He sees other people’s problems, but never examines his own heart. So ask yourself: If after believing in God for five, ten, or even thirty years, you still cannot see your pride, deceit, selfishness, and the evil and vicious nature within you, or even admit that you are corrupt, how can you genuinely repent and truly change? You cannot repent of what you refuse to see. You cannot turn away from what you refuse to admit. Knowing yourself is not the final goal, but it is a necessary beginning of genuine repentance and change. So how can we truly know our corruption and walk the path toward cleansing and change? We need to accept the exposure and judgment of truth, allowing it to reveal what is hidden deep within us. Jesus said: “I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth…” John 16:12–13 (KJV) Jesus spoke of the coming Spirit of truth, who would guide people into all truth. When truth exposes us, we begin to see what we could not see before—our pride, deceit, selfishness, wrong motives, and the sinful things hidden in our hearts. When we stop resisting that exposure, accept the truth, and genuinely repent, we can begin to put off corruption and experience real change. So if you have believed in God for many years, ask yourself: Do I truly know my own corrupt nature? Have I truly repented and changed? If this message speaks to your heart, comment: “Lord, lead me into truth and help me know myself.” And if you want to understand your sinful nature more deeply, learn how to put off corruption, and find the practical path toward true repentance and change, you are warmly invited to join our free online Bible study.
