One of the few likable things in this show was how toxic they painted the relationship between Greg and Steven as Steven grew up and realized how terrible of a dad he was.

It’s clear Greg was too focused on the idea of Steven rather than Steven as a person. I don’t get why people still have the audacity to call him a good dad

Its not even that Greg doesnt understand. Of course he doesnt, he cant and no one ever can fully understand Steven. The reason this scene was so defeating is that Greg doesnt even acknowledge anything that Steven was trying to communicate. And he doesnt apologize for the legitimately awful things Steven wants him to take accountability for.

everyone talks about how bad Greg was as a dad but not hot NEGLECTFUL the gems are! they didn't even teach him anything about gem history or culture until he was literally in the middle of a war! Greg wasn't there bc he literally wasn't allowed to be

Greg ignoring the REAL problem Steven was facing and chose to celebrate his rebellious outburst instead and that DAMAGED Steven. Forcing his son to come to the conclusion that NOBODY in this universe will understand him.... nobody can understand a universe

I’ve learned it’s usually better to just ask questions when you’re trying to comfort someone, and let them talk themselves down.

From my own perspective I think Greg was just saying he liked how Steven was telling him the truth about how he felt & he just wanted Steven to be honest unlike him he couldn’t do that with his own parents essentially saying he was better than him & wanted him to know whatever he needs to say good or bad he can say whatever on his mind cause at the end of the day all humans go through something no one goes through life without having no type of conflict I think Steven wanted Greg to be mad at him but why would you get mad at someone who’s clearly going through it that literally solves nothing especially when you can simply face your truth & talk to someone the whole last season was literally just Steven not being honest at every turn everyone wanted Steven to open up but you can’t force someone to do that

idk it was because greg was venting to steven when steven was clearly in a worse situation that him even though he was " luckier"

People call Greg a bad dad, but I grew up living the exact same life he did. Being controlled, never being your own person, not being able to talk back.

Then explained it to them, they are willing to do the work and try to comfort you I’m sure they’d be willing to listen to what you really need….keeping it in doesn’t help you or them

Greg was raising Steven through the lens of his own trauma. He was raising Steven how he would’ve wanted to be raised. But Steven needed to be raised for himself.

Greg’s not a perfect father. And I think this scene is very important because at some point as someone’s kid you stop seeing your parents as all on knowing and super smart and mature and start seeing them as flawed too. Sometimes they stop understanding you so easily too.

The first thing Greg wanted to do after becoming rich was set up some money for Steven to go to college. Steven said he doesn't want to because he's with the Crystal Gems. Greg buys his dream car instead and gives it to Steven when he's ready to move on from Beach City and see the country. Greg wasn't perfect but he tried and often times he was undermined by the Gems who were the only people who Greg could turn to to understand what Steven might have to deal with being half Gem.

What it comes down to is that just "love" isn't enough. The same way just providing basic needs is not enough. A good parent provides both if able. Greg wasn't a bad person but he was a bad father. He acted more as a friend to Steven than a parental figure. He felt too controlled in his youth so he over corrected and gave Steven too much freedom which robbed Steven of essential human experiences. Greg absolutely loved Steven but he also absolutely neglected him

tbh Greg understood entirely, he just thought that the things HE needed and wanted to hear from his dad would make steven feel better considering both came from toxic destructive families

Steven never would’ve been able to function in a normal society with greg but at the same time he didn’t come close to thriving with the gems, it really shows how steven is stuck in the middle

Greg was being a good dad in this scene, just sometimes a conversation doesn’t land well. Like. Steven just crashed Greg’s car after saying Greg’s abusive childhood wasn’t that bad. And Greg responds to that hurt with “I’m proud of you for being brave enough to tell me off” That’s super human patience. Sad that it isnt what steven wanted to hear, but like. What steven wanted was to be yelled at. A fight would have been helpful to get to the root of the issues and probably have been cathartic. Hard for me to begrudge greg for trying to reassure his son that he’s loved after a crisis instead. Esp after just revisiting the home that cut greg out because he stepped out of line.
