Have you ever been completely exhausted, but the moment you lie down your mind suddenly becomes wide awake? For someone who has experienced trauma, nighttime can be especially difficult. When everything becomes quiet, thoughts, memories, worries, or emotions that were pushed aside during the day can suddenly become much louder. Trauma can also leave the nervous system on high alert. Even when you know you're safe, your body may still have trouble relaxing enough to believe it. This can look different for everyone: • Difficulty falling asleep • Waking frequently throughout the night • Nightmares or disturbing dreams • Waking suddenly feeling anxious or panicked • Being extremely sensitive to sounds • Feeling like you need the TV, music, or background noise to sleep • Feeling exhausted even after several hours of sleep • Having trouble falling back asleep once you're awake If this sounds familiar, please give yourself some patience. 💛 Try creating a bedtime routine that tells your body, “The day is over. I'm safe enough to rest now.” Dim the lights. Put away stimulating screens when you can. Try slow breathing, calming music, white noise, gentle stretching, journaling, or something comforting that helps you feel grounded. And if you wake from a nightmare, take a moment to orient yourself to the present. Look around the room. Feel the bed underneath you. Notice what you can see, hear, and touch. Remind yourself where you are and that the dream has ended. You don't have to force yourself back to sleep immediately. Sometimes healing means teaching your nervous system, little by little, that nighttime doesn't always have to mean danger. If trauma-related sleep problems or nightmares are happening frequently or interfering with everyday life, talking with a trauma-informed mental-health professional or sleep specialist can be an important next step. 💗 To anyone struggling with sleep because of trauma: You're not weak because your body has trouble letting its guard down. Be patient with yourself. Healing takes time, and peaceful nights can become possible again. And to those supporting someone who struggles at night—sometimes the most helpful thing you can offer is patience, reassurance, and understanding. 🌙 Do you struggle more with falling asleep, staying asleep, nightmares, or a mind that simply won't shut off? You may be surprised how many people understand exactly what you're going through. #TraumaHealing #MentalHealthAwareness #TraumaRecovery #SleepProblems #PTSD
