@aestheticsurbexmain: The Maribyrnong Defence Site is one of Melbourne’s most significant former defence-industrial sites. Covering about 127 hectares beside the Maribyrnong River, its history stretches back more than a century. In 1908, the Commonwealth Government acquired land to establish an explosives factory. Australia wanted to manufacture explosives locally instead of relying on overseas supplies. The location provided separation from Melbourne while still having good transport access. The site expanded during the early 20th century, with factories, laboratories, storage buildings and testing areas. During World War II, it became especially important as Australia urgently needed ammunition and military supplies. Production increased greatly and thousands of people worked across the defence industries at Maribyrnong, including many women who entered industrial work during the war. After the war, defence production continued. During the Cold War, the site was involved in research and production connected with explosives, rocket propellants and other defence materials. Eventually, Australia’s defence industry changed. Older facilities became expensive and unsuitable for modern production, while manufacturing was consolidated into fewer locations. The need for such a large industrial complex near Melbourne also declined. The major explosives factory closed in May 1994. Other defence activities continued in the wider area for longer, meaning the entire site did not become abandoned at once. By 2006, the property was vacant and was later declared surplus to Defence requirements. The biggest reason the site has remained unused is contamination. More than a century of explosives and industrial activity left areas requiring specialist investigation and cleanup. Heritage is another major issue because many surviving buildings and structures demonstrate Australia’s defence history. The site’s huge size, contamination, heritage requirements, infrastructure costs and planning issues have made redevelopment difficult. There have also been problems with vandalism, theft, vegetation and fires. In January 2022, a major fire affected about 25 hectares and damaged around 25 buildings. The Maribyrnong Defence Site was not abandoned because of one event. Its decline happened gradually as defence needs changed, production moved elsewhere and the factories closed.
