I was 19 when I read this, and I was floored. I didn't see it coming, and it was so heartbreaking to realise that Nico, being from the past, was even more ashamed of what was happening to him

I read these books as an adult and I kept thinking Nico was gay, but firmly believed it would never be confirmed. I sobbed at that scene. I thought of the kids that would get to read this and see themselves in a mainstream YA novel. Uncle Rick made it Canon.

Oh I SOBBED 😭 I put the book down and cried hard. Nico is my favorite and he was a baby being pushed out of the closet 💔 even worse that he grew up in a time where people were killed for having the feelings he was so desperately trying to hide. And he was so alone, he was already living two lives between the two camps, a dead sister, and trying to keep the 2nd sister alive. Carrying an unimaginable weight in his shoulders 😭

I don't think Nico was planned to be gay, Rick saw the opportunity though, since Nico wasnt that solidified in his romantic preferences and he was like 10 when he allegedly had a crush on Annabeth. So it was a good move to make him gay instead of making a new character or retconning another
