@minarch1st: Graham’s number is one of the largest numbers that has appeared in a serious mathematical problem. It was developed by mathematician Ronald Graham in connection with a problem in an area of mathematics called Ramsey theory. The original problem involved coloring connections between points of a very high-dimensional cube. Mathematicians wanted to know how large the cube needed to be before a certain pattern was guaranteed to appear. To describe the enormous numbers involved, Graham’s number uses Knuth’s up-arrow notation. For example: 3 ↑ 3 = 3³ = 27 Two arrows are much more powerful: 3 ↑↑ 3 = 3^(3³) = 3²⁷ Three arrows make the number vastly larger again: 3 ↑↑↑ 3 Graham’s number begins with: g₁ = 3 ↑↑↑↑ 3 Then things get completely ridiculous. To create g₂, you use the number g₁ as the number of arrows between the 3s. So: g₂ = 3 ↑^(g₁) 3 Then you do the same thing again using g₂, producing g₃. This process continues until you reach g₆₄. Graham’s number is: G = g₆₄ The important thing is that Graham’s number is finite. It isn’t infinity. We simply cannot realistically write it out because its decimal representation would contain an unimaginably enormous number of digits. Interestingly, Graham’s number isn’t the largest number mathematicians know about. There are many numbers that are vastly larger.
