People saw when I lost weight over my life. They didn’t see what it was costing me. For years, binge eating and secret eating were a huge part of my relationship with food. Sometimes bingeing came after heavy restriction. Sometimes food was comfort, soothing or escape. Sometimes it was all tangled together. Then came the shame. And my answer to that shame was always the same: more control, another diet, another promise that I’d start again Monday. From the outside, weight loss could look like success. But I was measuring success by what I weighed. I wasn’t measuring how much of my brain was occupied by food, how much I was hiding, or how much of my life I was putting off until I’d lost weight.
