SEVERE BILATERAL CLEFT LIP AND PALATE 🩺 Severe bilateral cleft lip and palate is a congenital condition in which the tissues that normally form the upper lip and the roof of the mouth do not join completely during early development in pregnancy. In a bilateral cleft, the opening affects both sides of the upper lip and extends into the palate. 🧬 WHAT CAUSES IT? There is usually no single cause. Cleft lip and palate can result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors during early fetal development. Risk factors may include certain genetic conditions, some medications or harmful exposures during pregnancy, maternal nutritional deficiencies such as inadequate folate, smoking, alcohol exposure, and some maternal illnesses. However, having a risk factor does not mean it will definitely occur. 👶 WHAT PROBLEMS CAN IT CAUSE? Depending on its severity, a baby may experience: • Difficulty breastfeeding or feeding • Milk coming through the nose • Poor weight gain • Difficulty with swallowing • Ear infections and hearing problems • Speech difficulties as the child grows • Dental and tooth-development problems • Breathing problems in some severe cases • Emotional and social challenges later in life 🔍 HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED? A cleft lip can sometimes be detected during antenatal ultrasound. After birth, the diagnosis is usually obvious from physical examination. Doctors will also assess the baby's feeding, airway, hearing, growth and overall health, and may investigate for other congenital abnormalities when appropriate. 🏥 CAN IT BE TREATED? Yes. Cleft lip and palate can be treated. Treatment usually involves a multidisciplinary team, which may include plastic/cleft surgeons, paediatricians, dentists, orthodontists, ENT specialists, speech and language therapists, nutrition specialists and other professionals. Surgery is used to repair the lip and palate, often through staged procedures at appropriate ages depending on the child's health and the specific cleft. Treatment may continue throughout childhood because speech, hearing, teeth and facial growth need ongoing monitoring. 🍼 WHAT ABOUT FEEDING? Babies with a significant cleft palate may struggle to create the suction needed for normal breastfeeding or bottle-feeding. Special feeding techniques or specialised bottles may therefore be required. Good nutrition and adequate weight gain are extremely important before surgery. 🛡️ CAN IT BE PREVENTED? Not every case can be prevented because genetics and other factors are involved. However, appropriate preconception and antenatal care, including adequate folic acid intake and avoiding smoking, alcohol and harmful medications or exposures, can reduce the risk of some congenital abnormalities. ❤️ THE MOST IMPORTANT MESSAGE A baby born with a cleft is not a hopeless child. With early assessment, proper nutrition, appropriate surgery and long-term multidisciplinary care, many children with cleft lip and palate can develop good feeding, speech, hearing, dental function and quality of life. Never mock a child because of a congenital condition. Behind every unusual appearance is a human being who deserves dignity, love and proper medical care. ❤️‍🩹 🎥 REAL MEDICAL CASE • EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY DR BOOK FIGHTER 💫 LEARN • UNDERSTAND • EDUCATE • SAVE LIVES#fyp #foryou #viral #trending #medical
