Lynott was a musician, songwriter, and poet and is best known as the co-founder, lead vocalist, bassist, and primary songwriter for Thin Lizzy. Lynott was born in 1949, his father was British Guiana and his mother Irish, but he was raised mostly by his grandmother. As a teen, Lynott began singing in his first band, the Black Eagles. It was around this time that Lynott met future Thin Lizzy drummer, Brian Downey. Thin Lizzy became one of the world’s top rock bands by the middle of the decade, especially on the strength of the hit anthem “The Boys are Back in Town” and a string of classic albums Jailbreak, Bad Reputation, Live & Dangerous and Black Rose. In addition to the band’s instantly recognizable and infinitely copied, twin guitar attack supplied by Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson, it was Lynott’s storytelling writing, that most people focused on. Lynott also published several books of his poetry and released a pair of solo albums Solo in Soho and the Phil Lynott Album. But like many rockers of the 70’s, Lynott and most of his bandmates succumbed to the rock n’ roll lifestyle. Not only did it affect the quality of the band’s work by the early 80’s, it contributed to the band’s break-up by 1983 and turned out to be detrimental to Lynott’s health. After Thin Lizzy’s break-up, Lynott attempted to form another band, Grand Slam, which ultimately failed. Lynott increasingly suffered drug-related problems, particularly an addiction to heroin. In 1985, he had a final chart success with Moore, “Out in the Fields”, before his death in 1986. Lynott is one of rock musics most brilliant, charismatic, eloquent, iconic and important musicians.
