I wasn’t allowed gushers or redvines or hot Cheetos and now I am violently addicted to those things….so

Restriction leads to addiction. Parents should teach children how to be healthy, why some foods are healthier in large portions and others are healthier in smaller portions. Not restrict.

I was in an ingredient only household. water at every meal. no soda, no sweets, no snacks unless I went to someone else house or like party. I went crazy any time I got some. once I moved out, I only ate junk. at 26 year old, I am finally getting myself healthier and having a better relationship with “unhealthy” food. im finally learning how to have fun things in moderation.

I'm a nutrition tech working at a hospital and let me tell you, almost all the patients in pedo psychiatry (under 18yo) have ED because of the parents restrictions / relationship with food. It's so sad and frustrating.

Growing up in a restrictive household has had a tremendously negative impact on me as an adult.

my mom was very much the millenial who was hard on themselves about her weight but she neeeever taught me to be like that. I'll never understand parents pushing that onto their kids

I was put on the keto diet twice as a kid… making most of my foods as a kid very restrictive I started when I was 9 up until I was like 13-14. I’m still repairing my relationship with food. Being a kid and not being able to enjoy Halloween, birthdays or pizza parties hurt me a lot. I used to sneak crackers as a treat.

Growing up with an almond mom made me develop a food addiction/ED in highschool. Not letting your kids eat certain food will just make them want it more

My aunt was a fat free, low sodium, only veggies and more household. No eating out, no fast food. Guess what her sons did as soon as they graduated? They binged McDonald’s for a whole year.

Food restrictions caused me to be obese. When I moved away I started losing a lot of weight. I love my parents they tried but that doesn’t work with me.

Anytime I hear about kids being restricted food, I just think about the story my mum told me about a family who restricted sugar from their kids, then at a gathering, one of the kids ate a literal bowl of sugar set out for tea/coffee.

My almond mom gave me and all my siblings eating disorders. I hate seeing it pass down to my nieces and nephews now. I have to be the voice breaking the cycle. We had no access for sugar, our candy was traded out for fruit leathers etc. it flipped so badly when we got older and had our own money and autonomy. Restriction leads to overdoing or even worse restriction. I rarely have met someone in between.

Yep. We always had scheduled meals and weren’t allowed snacks unless it was like sunflower seeds. Cake or anything was only on b days or special events. No dark soda or even soda at all we only had sparkling cider on new years and it was basically in a shot glass. When I moved out now I gained an addiction to food and gained almost 100lbs. Granted yes my fault to some degree yes. But would limiting and having some room for fun food would have benefited me a bit more in self control.. also yes

I’m very glad with my dad. He made sure all my nutrients were met yet once in a while I also got Mac Donald’s and we made pizzas at home when I had a sleep over with my best friend.

I actually think that deciding whether a dessert is worth it or not makes a lot of sense. If I’m eating a well balanced, nutrient dense meal and think it’s a 6 out of 10 for taste, but a 10 out of 10 for health I’ll probably keep eating it. (But not order or make it again.) But if I encounter a dessert that is a 6 out of 10 for taste, I’m not going to continue. Why would I eat something with a ton of added sugar and white flour when I think that just eating a bowl of berries is a 10 out of 10 experience for both taste and health.
