actually there's an old rule where multiplication via parentheses has implied priority over normal multiplication and division, similar to how fractions have priority over division. so the answer is 1

A ! :
8÷2(2+2)
since there is no symbol between that 2 and the bracket, that means it's multiplication.
1st = (2+2) = 4
2nd 8÷2 = 4
3rd 4×4 = 16

The confusion is entirely from how the expression is presented. There is a reason nobody uses the division sign at higher than a grade school level. The correct answer is 1 when the expression is written as 8/2(2+2)

I really don't like the fact that the video doesn't clarify the difference between 8÷2(2+2) and 8÷2×(2+2). these two are not the same thing.

You can simply use BODMAS(brackets, orders, division, multiplication, Addition, subtraction

If it had been written like below, it would be 1, but as it stands, I agree, it's 16.
Additional brackets to remove ambiguity would have helped:
8 ÷ (2(2 + 2)) =
= 8 ÷ (2(4))
= 8 ÷ (2 x 4)
= 8 ÷ 8
= 1

Ally_Cat💜 :
why wouldn't you just use BODMAS in this case??
B- brackets
O- I honestly don't know 😳
D- division
M- multiplication
A- addition
S- subtraction

the reason people get confused by this is because division is down right to left but the problem goes from left to right. the question becomes more clear.if it was written 8 over 2 multipled by 2 plus 2. 8/2(2+2)=16.

Milo The Cute Scottish Fold :
It actually depends on how you understand the expression; you could either take it as 8/2 and (2+2) which would be 16 or you could take it as 8/2(2+2) which would give a 1.

that whole problem can be rewriten as 8 over 2 times 4 which would be simplify to 4 over 1 time 4 or 4 over 4 aka 1

stillonest :
Its 1. The number outside the parentheses still counts for the entire parenthetical part of the problem. The 2x() is not a separate function, it’s part of the parenthetical

Okay, so I got the answer 1, but that's because I'm an old bitty and apparently I learned the math BEDMAS version that used "implicit multiplication" (solve for the bracket first) - it would seem as though the new (to me) math uses the modern standard teaching method without the implicit parentheses/brackets, which makes it 16. The real answer is that this is a very poorly written math problem. Good thing I looked this up because my son just started grade 4 and I don't want to be screwing up his homework help 😂. So the answer IS 16. *whispers* but it was 1 in 1990.
