it was actually very common historically to name a younger child after a deceased older one. makes geneological research extremely confusing 😂 sometimes you'll find a string of unfortunate Mary's who all died before the parents gave up and tried a different name 😭

My grandfather had 10 children with my grandmother, one was named Irma. He left that family, went back to their home country & had an another family and named another daughter Irma.

I agree with you. I personally don’t think people should be using their kids as some sort of memorial plaque for fallen friends and relatives. They deserve their own identity without having to think about someone they’ve never even met. It weighs heavy on a person as they grow up.

I’m named after my dead aunt (died as a baby), visited her grave when grandmother died. It’s eerie to see your name on a tombstone

My grandma had 10 children and 3 died as babies. She reused their names for my aunts and uncles. Like she name three girls Paula the last one being my alive aunt, I guess it was more common back then but I don’t think she thought of them as reincarnation, she just wanted a child to have that name, I don’t know what she named the boy I’m guessing one of my uncles’ or dad’s name. I don’t really ask my dad why she did that and she’s not alive for me to ask

frank Sr. had 3 sons named them all frank and told my deceased husband Frank 2 ... I figured if I named you all Frank I'd eventually get to keep one of you... it was the most saddest thing and deeply affected my husband he suffered with depression and anxiety badly

I'm pretty sure Van Gogh had an older brother that died. they named him Vincent first and I think they were born on the same day a year apart

Richard David James (08/18/1971) Aphex Twin was named after his stillborn older brother named Richard that died in 1968 in Canada his mother kept the name because she couldn’t accept the death.
