@lilmaverick3: Cheating students, university, college, AI, “lies students tell” with dramatic flair. Faculty mental and physical health are getting wrecked.
"The program doesn't deserve to be accredited if we let it go". I have never agreed with anything more. This is why I actually try to root out my AI cheats.

Heavy on “But I just used Grammarly” after the class discussion looking at Grammarly and how it is AI. And the exponential workload increase.

I used to read papers, really read them...now, AI usage is so rampage that I find myself skimming like a detective BEFORE I could really read the submission. So, I am spending more time per paper just to know if someone is trying to fool me and that infuriates me because it is such a WASTE OF MY TIME. What's even more bothersome is that even though I try to be objective and unbiased, the entire grading paradigm has shifted for me to the point that I suspect I am biased toward the real papers and, perhaps, I am more lenient. Grading is now a complex issue for me, and I really have to pore over each paper because I insist on being fair and objective but I wonder if my subconscious betrays that.

My son’s suite mate has a professor that makes them use AI. He is horrified but needs to take the class.

also a note on accessibility. I’m dyslexic and used grammarly throughout my academic career. I used it less and less as I gained confidence and equally accepted that my writing wouldn’t be perfect. After I took AP Language and Composition in high school, and read E.B. White’s “Elements of Style,” I ignored half the suggestions grammarly made. I knew what I was doing, that my clunky sentence structures or not quite the right word gave my paragraphs the undertones I intended. This is all to say, while I respect your decision to ban grammarly, I’m not convinced you are going about it correctly. Students need to know that you TRUST them and believe in their ability to write freely and expressively. But some advice for your dyslexia students - text-to-speech is a wonderful thing. I will read my writing and autocorrect any grammar mistakes but a robot voice will not lol.

Meanwhile, I have a child who is so absolutely terrified her own writing will be accused of being AI that she stresses herself out completely any time she has to submit a written assignment, even though she has a whole school career proving she is an excellent writer and doesn’t need AI and hates it.

I would have been accused constantly. I have had AI review things I have written and received a few minor changes I disagreed with. I prefer what I write.

The only way to ensure it doesn’t happen again is to report it officially as an academic integrity breach. Otherwise, they will just do it in their other classes until they get caught.

i can’t imagine your frustration. i’m so scared for my future kids with how AI has and will continue to change education. a pen and paper essay written during class time is starting to feel like the only option. but my issue with it is the fact that we cannot know if AI was used or not. AI checkers are VERY often wrong and are an AI themselves. there is no proper recourse for a professor or teacher who knows AI was used OR for a student falsely accused of using AI. it’s a mess and universities have a difficult task of trying to figure it out. i definitely FEEL like i hear a lot of AI speak these days but it’s a just a feeling. and i love my em dashes but have intentionally avoided them recently - paradoxically letting AI dictate my writing. so well i understand the frustration, please give grace to your students as well. i’d say (seeing as it seems you’ve accused many many students of AI usage) there’s is a 99.9% chance you have falsely accused at least one student of AI.

I’ve never had a student admit to using AI. Most are the 3rd reaction: outrage and “how dare you accuse me! This is discrimination, you’re out to get me!” Then, when I ask them to explain their answers, they cannot and say I give them SO much anxiety that they just forget EVERYTHING, including the meaning of words they supposedly wrote themselves 🤦🏻♀️

I use poison pill instructions. I have never had a single student claim I was wrong in judging them as having used AI. There is no reason to have three fictitious words I made up in your work.
