as a teacher it always breaks my heart when kids with ADHD have parents who "don't believe in meds." those kids end up suffering needlessly, both academically and socially with their peers.

As someone who was not medicated until I was an adult, it made me realized that I lived 33 years of life thinking I was forgetful, lazy, and irresponsible. I started taking medication and realized I could have lived my whole life feeling “normal”!!!

I was diagnosed and they decided not to treat me. I finally got meds at 37 and immediately had my daughter medicated as well. It was life changing for me and I realized I could have had a 10000% different life experience. Things should not be harder for her just because her brain works differently

My husband was skeptical of medication for our daughter. I asked him to look up the risks of UNTREATED adhd along with the risks of the medications. He changed his mind. We’re so thankful for meds.

I still struggle even though I’m maxed out on meds — but I wouldn’t be getting a PhD if wasn’t medicated since a young age

I think we are still far too quick to jump to medication management despite the changes since the 2000s. Kids might need meds to improve their life but they don’t need to be on stimulants to control behavior.

My son started meds at 15 & he’s like “I could have lived easier like this so much earlier?!” And was sad about not wanting to take meds sooner. 😭

I was an undiagnosed kid and I have so much resentment towards my parents for never doing anything. Just let me struggle all through school, struggle with having to mask just to make friends, struggle with everything! I’m 37, back in college full time and am finally diagnosed with meds and I’ve made the honor roll every semester for the last 2 years. That could’ve been my life as a kid!

I have late dx ADHD (36 yo) and my son was diagnosed a few years ago. I was worried about starting stimulants young but something my husband said changed my mind. He said “don’t make him struggle like you had to” and that stopped me dead in my tracks. Due to suffering some of the reason you described here I had a lot harder time in school and life in general.

The medication helps them breathe while building the skills they need to overcome the lack of executive functioning.

My parents said no to meds when i was 8 because "people would judge if they put their child on medication". Anyway, I'm 35 and scored 7/11. Please help your children.

I got put on meds when I was 8 and 10 years later I was on heroin. I also have friends who weren’t medicated as kids who maybe should have been who also ended up on drugs. Common denominator? Parents thought the kids were the problem and abused us.

but.. what if stimulants work wonders but cause tics (everything else ruled out), and SSRIs cause serotonin syndrome, and we are all now terrified to try an SNRI...?

My parents actually apologized after my diagnosis. They felt terrible that they didn’t know more so they could help new. My parents fucked up a lot don’t get me wrong but the apology and acknowledgement meant a lot

We have appointments coming up soon. I have lots of notes/questions for his providers 😅 I’m not against meds at all, I’m just worried about the autism combined w/ ADHD & how the meds for tx of ADHD might affect him due to the autism.
