There is something deeply cruel about Jonas and Martha. Not only because they lose each other, but because in some strange way, they are also the ones who take each other away. Jonas watches Martha die by the hand of Adam, without fully understanding that Adam is also him. Another Martha kills Jonas. Different worlds, different versions, different moments... but somehow the pain always comes back to the same two people. And maybe this is what hurts me the most about Dark. Jonas says they are perfect for each other. At first it sounds romantic, almost innocent. But after everything that happens, these words become so much more sad. Because maybe they really are perfect for each other. Just not in the beautiful meaning we usually give to this sentence. They are perfect like two pieces of the same tragedy. They cannot completely exist without the other, but they also cannot stay together without creating more suffering. Every road seems to bring Jonas back to Martha, and Martha back to Jonas. Even when time changes, even when worlds change, even when they themselves are no longer the same persons. I think sometimes we imagine destiny as something beautiful. Like two people who are meant to find each other, no matter what. But Dark shows another side of this idea. What if being destined for somebody is not a blessing? What if destiny does not care if you are happy? What if two people can love each other truly, deeply, maybe more than anyone else... and still their existence together is the reason everything breaks? This is why their story feels so human to me, despite all the impossible things around them. Because sometimes love is not enough to save something. Sometimes you can love a person with everything you have and still hurt them. Sometimes the person you would destroy the world for is also the person you need to let go. And maybe the saddest part is that Jonas and Martha spend so much time trying to reach each other, when the only way to finally save each other is to accept a world where neither of them can exist. “We're perfect for each other.” Maybe they were.
