@jeffkrasno: Make America Great Again? When was it actually great? DJT and his billionaire cronies likely long for the Gilded Age. But mostly this nostalgia is reserved for the 1950’s. America emerged as the world’s great superpower. Of course, the 1950s weren't great for everyone. If you were Black in a redlined neighborhood, you couldn't get a loan and build intergenerational wealth. If you were a woman, you were largely sidelined from economic activity. If you were gay, you lacked basic rights. But there was some real greatness. We rebuilt Europe with the Marshall Plan. We founded NASA. We established the NIH, the CDC, the EPA (1970), and we grew our public universities. Those are the very institutions now being gutted and defunded. By the very people claiming to want to restore that greatness. The version of greatness worth reclaiming was rooted in a simple belief: that the government can and should play a constructive role in building a great society. That we share a collective dream for one another. Greatness was never a condition of the past waiting to be restored. It was a set of choices.
