As a niche artist, you always dream of your work getting a ton of exposure… but you never anticipate it’ll happen like this. This was a very formative experience for me personally and professionally. I hope the lessons I learned can help other artists protect themselves: 1. Don’t think because you’re small that this can’t happen to you. You never know who’s creepin’ 2. Copyright your work. I thought just making something gave you enough protection but no way. If you want social media sites to take your fraud reports seriously you need legal documentation that you’re the copyright holder (meta continually found nothing wrong with the scam accounts marketing my stolen art). 3. Don’t let your videos be downloadble! I made this mistake on TikTok which is how the scammers got my video. 4. Don’t show every detail of your product in your product photography! As a n00b I showed all the pages of my calendar and it was like handing the scammers my product on a silver plater. At least make them work to rip you off! 5. Let your community be your eyes and ears! Y’all sent me links to scam sites, spammed comments on the fraud posts to direct people to me, and reported the ads. You helped real people not get ripped off! I am eternally grateful!!! 6. Report the scammers to the companies HOSTING their sites (a lot of mine used Shopify). 7. Hire a lawyer if you can. It’s pricey but it affords you time to work on the parts of your business you love. And nothing scares a scammer like a cease and desist notice on law firm letterhead. 8. Scammers suck… but they are few and far between in comparison to the MANY KIND PEOPLE I met through this experience. I was blown away by how many people searched for the real artist and reached out. People got ripped off and STILL bought the real calendar from me ❤️ Let this be a reminder of how willing individuals are in supporting small businesses 🥹 your work matters and it deserves to be shared with the world (and protected).
