Anyone in your family getting A-Levels today? I hope it goes well for them, but if it doesn’t, here is a reminder that life doesn’t always go as we plan, but it does plan out, in ways you least expect. . I didn’t get into medical school the first time. I failed to get the grades I needed. I failed to get interviews. My head of year wrote me a reference stating that she didn’t think I would make a good doctor & that I didn’t have what it takes . When I applied to paediatric training, I didn’t get in the first time either & so many people said “maybe it wasn’t for me” “it’s a hard speciality” & even “I’m not sure it’s the speciality for you”. Again I took a breath, figured out what I needed to & secured a London training post & got my top choice of jobs. I went onto pass my MRCPCH exams with a 118/120 but that’s not what makes me a good Doctor, its everything else. It’s Me. . Your worth isn't determined by a grade or a result or success. I didn’t let the teacher who didn’t believe in me hold me back. I believed in me. I knew what I wanted & I worked hard to get it. I took a gap year, did an access to medicine course & I found a teacher whose reference made me weep when I read it. Life doesn’t always go to plan but know you are so much more than a piece of paper & there are so many of us out here, who never planned for a lot of things but who are still doing what we dreamt of, or doing things we never dreamt of & happy. . I wasn’t born into a family of medics, I am the first doctor in mine. I didn’t get into medicine the first time, or even paediatric training the first time. But here I am a paediatrician none the less. I have worked hard to get here & doing things I never thought possible. I didn’t let grades, or the opinions of others hold me back & neither should you .
