As a Mexican immigrant to the US, I always felt I related more to my black and Asian classmates than white people. Their parents and family were so much more similar to mine.

I agree to an extent. We also have deep history of resilience and resistance especially in the Bay Area. Yellow peril supports black power during the black panther movement in oakland is a great example. Many Asian Americans were black panthers. We have our own history and influence as well. I wouldn’t say we assimilated, rather influenced and co-created sub cultures in California alongside black Americans & Latinx communities. Having this notion that only Asians are assimilating either into white culture or non white culture, positions us as “docile” “submissive” beings which are white s*prem*cist stereotypes to begin with. All communities assimilate to a certain extent for survival in white america and we all influence one another to create subcultures to this day. Largely the most influential community has been black Americans

Correct! All the Asians I know and myself grew up on hip-hop, R&B, and watched shows with Black families as much as we did White families and lived right next to Latinos. (I went to a school that was 80% Latino) We lived with diversity while still celebrating our own cultures, especially if you're Southeast Asian. The beauty of any diaspora experience is you basically start to have a hybrid soup of all the cultures - the one your family raised you in, your surroundings outside of the house, and the media you absorb.

Has nothing to do with "told to distance themselves from". Poorer Asians will spend more time with similar income people, and richer Asians will spend more time with similar income people.

The Asian American subculture is very location dependent. Even in Southern California, there are so many microcosms of different types of Asian Americans that there isn’t just one archetype.

There are different tiers. As a blasian from California I resonate more with like 626 Asian American. So does my Taiwanese American bf. My full Asian cousin would be more “whitewashed” Americans from Newport. They feel like I am the more “Asian” one. I think only some parts of Southern Californian you will have Asians who have adapted more Mexican /black American culture. They are usually Filipino or SEA , possibly Chinese from Alhambra but they are over 35. Overall the environment you grew up in dictates behavior.

Had an identity crisis ab this ngl. Growing up in predominantly white areas, i only felt comfortable making close friends w black and latino kids. I alr felt disconnected with my own culture (2nd gen filo) that’s where making friends w black and latino kids i felt the most kinship with. I’ll never stop singing praise for the cultures that accepted me; and i’m currently trying to find my way back to my own culture too

Growing up all the schools I went to were made of Asians, Hispanics, African Americans, and Pacific Islanders. I didn’t have any problems making friends and got along with most of my peers.
