Frederick Douglas, Malcolm X, Obama, Booker T Washington, Kamala Harris, Lenny Kravits, Lisa Bonet, Jasmine Guy, Drake, Faith Evan, Bob Marley, Slash, Sade, Derek Jeter - they have all been labeled black (in media and history books). So we need to be consistent if we’re calling biracial black or not.

While I do agree with what your saying. No one, outside the black community cares that I’m mixed. Other races categorize/perceive me as black. I have two biracial parents so I was also raised black with my black family so I identify as black. While I acknowledge I am other races I am not ingrained in the other cultures.

ngl atp I'm tired. the second someone starts with the "youre not black youre mixed" I just leave the conversation. I'm not entertaining it anymore. I go where I'm wanted/loved, and stay away from where I'm not.

This is so exhausting tho 😩 I’m so tired of ppl telling me what I need to do and how I need to live. You think we’re not aware our lived experience is often different? We surely do. But we aren’t all the same. Each of us have it different. A biracial kid with a blk single mom living southern California has really nothing in common with a biracial with a white mom and black dad living together rural Tennessee. If they both look black tho then they’re gonna get treated as black. Colorism aside of course which is a related convo. In America we’ve always been part of the black community even if we don’t personality identify with that. If this was South Africa it would be different but it’s not. You don’t just wake up one day and decide to start your own unique culture and group. Like I said we have very few things in common. We aren’t a group.

it's so complicated. that's why i will always always refer to myself as a "Black mixed person" bc if i just say "Black" or "mixed" it's assumed I'm antiBlack OR trying to claim the "full Black" experience. I'm Black by culture and life experience AND I know still my place as a mixed person since my mama is Japanese. but shoutout to my dad's family for doing so much to ensure our side of culture was not lost for me or my brother

I'm not even biracial or rlly mixed like that and ppl still tell me I'm not black.....meanwhile both my parents are just light skin with hooded/slanted eyes so we LOOK mixed. Ppl are so obsessed with trying to tell colored people what they are and aren't - it's weird af from both sides of the spectrum

I feel like the lived experience comes from Phenotype. Being black is as much about phenotype as everything else. Some mixed people are black because they appear that way. Some are not because they do not.

I get it, partially. But the rest of the world just sees him as Black (outside of our community) I’m not even biracial…I’m maybe like 15% Native, my grandmother was FULL. But when I tell people I’m black, I get questioned. I was raised “Black”, idk much about Native culture so I hope if I ever do big things people don’t nit pick me apart.

As a biracial that has tan skin I agree with you wholeheartedly, but also the nuance in this situation is so weird cause I grew up in the south and just because I have curly hair and a big nose I was grouped as just a black person by yt ppl. But I agree that biracial people deserve to be our own group. We are never claimed by either race and we are more than just one race even in the way we think, act & speak.
