@iamnancycooper: Can someone with avoidant attachment actually have a healthy relationship? Yes. Avoidant attachment is not a relationship death sentence. It’s an adaptation. If someone learned early that vulnerability wasn’t safe, emotional needs weren’t consistently met, or closeness came with criticism, control or rejection, their nervous system may have learned: “I’ll handle everything myself.” “I don’t need anyone.” “When this becomes overwhelming, I leave.” But default wiring does NOT have to dictate someone’s behavior forever. I know because my own attachment system naturally leans avoidant. I didn’t need to become a completely different person. I needed to learn relational skills my nervous system hadn’t learned. How do I stay present when I’m overwhelmed? How do I ask for space without disappearing? How do I tolerate conflict without immediately deciding the relationship needs to end? How do I hear that I’ve disappointed someone without interpreting it as proof that I’m inadequate? How do I allow myself to actually need another person? Those are skills. And skills can be learned. But here’s the distinction that matters if you’re dating someone with avoidant attachment: Awareness is not behavioral change. Someone can know they’re avoidant. Understand their childhood. Know exactly why they pull away. And STILL disappear every time intimacy becomes uncomfortable. So don’t evaluate someone’s relationship capacity by how well they understand their attachment style. Evaluate whether their behavior is actually changing. Avoidant attachment doesn’t make someone incapable of love.
