@justagirlinscrubs37: First week of school as a school nurse in New Jersey and… WOW. 😅🩺 I genuinely did not expect this job to be this mentally draining at the start of the year. I’m used to ER stress. I work per diem in the emergency department, so I know what it feels like to be physically exhausted, running around for 12 hours, dealing with high-acuity patients, alarms, emergencies and nonstop chaos. School nursing stress is completely different. It’s parents trying to drop off medication when it has to be an adult-to-adult exchange. It’s finding out a new student has an allergy or medical condition that was never documented. It’s calling parents, waiting on physician paperwork, making medical alert lists, creating care plans and making sure teachers, kitchen staff and everyone else involved are aware of what keeps that child safe. It’s reviewing incoming kindergarten charts, organizing EpiPen training, setting up AED crisis drills, preparing for evacuations and fire drills, answering teachers’ questions about individual students… while still having a steady stream of little patients walking into the health office all day. And yes, sometimes it’s: “My child has a milk allergy.” “What happens when they drink milk?” “They get diarrhea and fart.” Respectfully… we need to discuss allergy versus intolerance. 😭😂 There is SO much happening behind the scenes that people never see. School nursing is not just Band-Aids, ice packs and “my tummy hurts.” There is a tremendous amount of planning, communication, documentation and responsibility involved in keeping hundreds of children safe every day. This first week definitely humbled me. 😂 Here’s hoping week two is a little smoother. 🙏🏼 And parents, from your school nurse with love: please complete the forms, provide the documentation, follow medication protocols and clearly communicate your child’s medical needs. It makes everyone’s life easier, but most importantly, it helps us take care of your babies safely. ❤️🩺 Be kind to your school nurse.
