I blame the overtly casual usage of ‘girlfriends’ in middle aged woman. “Oh I’m just getting brunch with my girlfriends” “oh I’m hanging out with one of my girlfriends” it like over normalized it. That and homophobia of course.

I worked with a lady who talked about her girlfriend so I assumed she was talking about a partner. One day she mentions a husband or male partner or something and I realized every time she mentioned a girlfriend she was talking about hanging out with a friend who is a girl and they were all different people. ☠️then one time I saw a thin blue line jacket on the back of her chair lol

if its from women in their 40’s and up, girlfriend just means female friend. like the show Girlfriends. my Mom and her friends still call each girlfriends. you gotta make it clear you’re talking about your romantic partner. if its from younger people, they probably are just being ignorant

THIS is why I detest people calling friends their “girlfriends”. I’m GenX and didn’t hear anyone do this until I was at least 40. Whenever I hear it, I play dumb and assume it’s meant romantically. Married 50 yr. old woman says, “My girlfriends and I are in a book club.” I reply, “That’s amazing that your husband doesn’t mind you dating women too.”

That's why I skip small talk and just mention my wife. To be fair, we've been together since 2007-ish, so like... We both know we're not separating lol 😅 But it does bypass the "oh but I thought...?!" conversation - they have NO excuse that way, even if you're fibbing and not married.
