@lisak0606: Your ostomy saved your life, but it doesn't define it. I’m new to this chapter and I’m trying to accept this life change with grace. What helped you regain confidence early on? Let’s support each other and share some tips and positive vibes!#ostomy #stoma #MentalHealth #colostomy #colostomyawareness
People are normally busy with the own things in their mind and they don’t know you have a ostomy . You are the only one that knows. They won’t be looking at you, looking for a bag. Wear it with confidence.!! It gave you another chance .

I had a month prior to surgery and watched a ton of social media videos of people changing their bags just to desensitize myself and came across so many beautiful women living with their ostomy everyday, showing their confidence, beauty and not letting it define them. That really helped me in accepting it aside from the fact that it was a life saving surgery.

Getting out and DOING. There’s no other way! The only way to regain your confidence is to start trying to do what you used to do, one step at a time. It does take time, not gonna lie! You have had major reconstructive surgery, layers, deep, and it takes time for all of that to heal. Same thing goes for eating! There may be a ton of things in the beginning that you think you can’t eat anymore. They will give you pain, cranky belly, but as time goes on, and your body adjusts to having to digest your food, much more quickly, that will change! I can eat pretty much anything and everything that I used to. Everybody is different, but that’s just my story. Hope that helps!

Time. It takes time. It’s up and down and emotional and hard. Good days and bad. But time makes you better at handling the physical and the emotional toll

I’ve had mine for 3 years..diverticulitis ..I read everything about having an ostomy and how it’s done and how to take care of it so when I had it I was ok with it..I did find out to keep some air in your bag so your output doesn’t pancake and give you a blow out and I use skinister to keep my appliance on. It’s sticky and I get it from Amazon it’s a game changer.

I went into surgery thinking it was a temporary ileostomy and because of damage from radiation it is going to have to become a permanent colostomy. I am 8 months in and surgery to convert will be in March. It takes time but when I accepted it, it helped a lot. I joined a local support group, follow influencers with one and see my ostomy clinic monthly to just make sure everything is working for me. Hang in there it does get better and just becomes another part of your normal 🙂

It took longer than early on but once the leaks were under control and I viewed posts on TikTok, I got more confident.

I don’t have one. But my 4 year old boy has had one twice since one day old. I just need to say all of you in the ostomy community are warriors. Taking care of a child with an ostomy has been the most mentally draining and rewarding experience. All of your stories and advice have helped me so much. There’s nothing you can’t do with your ostomy. Picture of my warrior boy living his best life with whoopie (his stomas name)❤️

I’ve had mine since 2003. It takes a bit getting used to no doubt. My biggest issue was finding an appliance that fit me for my lifestyle. Last thing I wanted to do is worry about smells or leaks. There are many companies that will send you free samples. And you can see which product works best for you… believe me it doesn’t take long for this to just be part of your daily routine. Like brushing your hair or washing your face.👌😎

Contact the major companies Coloplast and Convatec they will send you all kinds of free stuff. Great resources all free. Get those free samples and try all the bags till you find the right one for you. Mine Coloplast sensura mio convex 2 piece system with the barrier extenders and skinster adhesive.
I got my reversal surgery and I am doing great. Good luck!

Not 💩 myself is the best feeling in the world. After wearing diapers for 10 yrs, I asked for my ostomy. Best thing I ever decided to do. I can travel without fear. And have.

I've had mine for 9 months. Give yourself grace and don't rush the healing. I've had good and bad days but I'm finding my new normal and you will too.

I have had mine since 1995, before there was social media, or even a lot of videos or information. I had to learn that it didn’t define me. It didn’t change who I am. It allowed me to go on and live a FULL life, one I may not have had before it. I was able to finally finish college, become a nurse, have romantic relationships, have a child, and so much more. It wasn’t easy, but knowing that it gave me the ability to LIVE my life, helped make the next 35 years worth it.

I find the wins in the day. 3 weeks out of surgery and I’m learning and growing. I went from having leaks every other day to now going on day 3 with this bag and I’m like yes that’s a win!
