Subject: Thursday, 6 p.m.: please be there Neighbors, I have called a Special Meeting of the City Commission for Thursday, August 13, at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall. Here is why it matters. Broward's 28 cities built the Solid Waste Authority together, and its 40-year Master Plan sets how our region handles trash and recycling for the next four decades. Every member city has to vote before August 14. There is no other meeting left on the calendar. Miramar has always led on this issue. When Miami-Dade tried to put the nation's largest incinerator at Airport West, next door to our neighborhoods, we fought it and we won. That fight is not over. There is still talk about disposal capacity at the county's west landfill, a few miles from here. I want us at that table, with a seat and a vote, so we can press our concerns through the RFP process and keep an incinerator out of west Broward. A city that opts out has no vote and no leverage. It fends for itself. Under our Charter, it takes three commissioners present to hold a meeting and three yes votes to pass anything. An empty chair is not neutral. No quorum means no action, and the deadline passes the next day. In effect, not showing up is a no vote. I am respectfully asking every one of my colleagues to be in that chamber Thursday, and I have asked staff to make every accommodation the law allows for anyone with travel. Whatever your position, our residents deserve to see this debated and decided on the record. And I am asking you to come. City Hall, 2300 Civic Center Place, Thursday at 6:00 p.m. Public comment will be taken, or watch on Miramar TV. We kept an incinerator out of our backyard once.
