Instead of particles being able to move through only three spatial directions—left/right, forward/backward, and up/down—its particles could move through a fourth spatial direction that we cannot directly perceive. A 4D gas would be extraordinarily strange to a 3D observer. Its particles could appear to vanish, reappear, change shape, or pass through objects without breaking them, simply because they are moving partly through the fourth spatial dimension. A container that looks completely sealed in 3D might not actually contain the gas at all—the particles could move around the container through the fourth dimension. The gas itself could have structures impossible for ordinary matter. A single 4D particle might intersect our universe as a tiny point, then become a larger shape, then disappear completely as it moves farther along the fourth axis. An entire cloud of 4D gas passing through our world could therefore look like a constantly changing collection of strange, translucent shapes that appear from nowhere and dissolve back into nothing. Temperature and pressure would also behave differently. The particles would have an additional direction in which to spread, meaning a 4D gas could expand into regions that are completely inaccessible to ordinary 3D matter. If it became extremely energetic, its particles could move through our space at bizarre angles that have no equivalent in three-dimensional physics. To a hypothetical 4D being, however, this gas might be completely ordinary—just as normal air is ordinary to us. We would be the ones living in the strange, lower-dimensional world. What we perceive as an impossible phenomenon could simply be a normal 4D cloud intersecting our universe. In this hypothetical scenario, a massive 4D gas cloud could stretch far beyond anything visible to us, extending through a fourth spatial direction while only a tiny cross-section of it remained observable in 3D. The true size of the cloud could therefore be impossible for us to determine from our perspective. 4D gas wouldn’t simply be “air with another dimension.” It would be matter whose entire geometry, movement, expansion, and interaction with our universe followed rules that are fundamentally beyond ordinary 3D experience.
