I’m in love with this waistband! 😍 It’s flat at the front and has elastic at the back. It turned out so good. I have to show you how I did it just in case you wanna try it too. I learned the technique years ago from this youtube video and immediately I did it on these shorts but I’ve never done it on a circle skirt. These days I make my circle skirts with a full elastic waistband but I’ve been craving a flat look without using a zipper and this instantly came to mind. A circle skirt usually has one piece but this technique requires two so I cut the circle skirt into two pieces then I drafted and cut a slightly curved waistband for the front and a big rectangle for the back. I put the two front pieces right sides together and I stitched the top then I understitched the seam allowance. That way, the wrong side won’t come over to the front of the waistband. I took that piece and I stitched it to one of the skirt pieces then I stitched the big rectangle to the other skirt piece. I put those together, pinned the seams and stitched the whole skirt together. My circle skirt had pockets so I left a gap in the side seam so my hands could go in and then I stitched around the curve of each pocket. I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t add pockets. Pockets are a must. Ironing is also a must. I love this part where I used bias tape to finished the raw edge of the waistband instead of folding it over because that has always been one of my least favorite things about sewing structured waistbands. I stitched the elastic into the sides of the skirt and now all I had to do was fold the waistband over, pin it in place and stitch in the ditch. I can imagine that this will look even better on cotton fabric because it’s more lightweight than denim fabric so I’ll try that next time hit I love how this turned out. If this all sounds like gibberish and you want an in depth tutorial, let me know in the comments and I’ll post one on youtube.
