@beadifficultemployee: The worst time to start looking for your employment records is AFTER something has already gone wrong. If you suddenly lose access to your work email or company systems, the performance reviews, policies, and employment documents you assumed you could always pull up may no longer be available to you. I spent 15+ years as an HR Director, and I want employees thinking about documentation before there’s a PIP, complaint, termination, or other workplace problem. That means keeping appropriate records related to your own employment—NOT confidential company information, client information, trade secrets, or documents you aren’t entitled to have. Your employment history can become incredibly important if the story about your performance, pay, responsibilities, or treatment changes later. My What HR Won’t Tell You guide breaks down how to protect yourself at work, document what’s happening, work with HR, recognize potential retaliation, and use practical scripts and templates when you need them. If ER dos not disclose information about investigation and it continues. What happens next or how to escalate?

This HR LMER Specialist agrees. As an advisor to supervisors and managers the first thing I look for is documentation when they want to hold employees accountable. If it ain’t sufficient it ain’t happening. I work on the federal side and although I represent management, what this administration has done to federal employees from mass firings to stripping the bargaining unit of their Union rights to representation is absolutely appalling. Count us all joy because now all employees seek advice from me now and it gives me the opportunity to educate everyone on both sides so I appreciate you letting employees know how to protect themselves because there are awful supervisors out there whether they work for the government or not. 🥰🥰🥰
