@goatcult.media: In October 2018, 21-year-old University of Utah student-athlete Lauren McCluskey discovered that her boyfriend, Melvin Rowland, had lied about his name, age and criminal history and was a registered sex offender. She ended their relationship on October 9. In the days afterward, Lauren contacted campus police multiple times about suspicious messages and eventually reported that Rowland was blackmailing her with private photos, even paying $1,000 after being threatened. On October 22, Rowland confronted Lauren outside her residence hall while she was on the phone with her mother. Police say he dragged her into the back seat of a car and shot her multiple times. Her body was discovered around 9:55 p.m. Rowland fled, but police found him hours later. After a foot chase, he entered a church and died by suicide. Lauren’s case later brought major scrutiny to how campus police handled her reports, and an independent review resulted in 30 recommendations for improving campus safety.
